The Granite Surface Plate: Ensuring Accuracy and Precision
One tool that is used often but is generally overlooked is the granite surface plate. It is a simple block of granite with a flat and highly precise surface. This tool is used as the base for all measurements that must be taken while a part lays on a flat surface. A regular table or desk could cause inaccurate measurements, so the surface plate is extremely important in ensuring high precision in all of our machined parts and all quality control operations. Our surface plate is maintained and regularly calibrated to ensure excellent quality in all of our parts, as we recognize the importance of exact precision in any dimension we machine or measure.
The Microscope: Unveiling Subtle Details for Uncompromising Quality
We often think of laboratory work when you think of a microscope, but this is a tool that is used in our quality control department regularly. When machining parts to extremely tight tolerances, some dimensions are so precise that the human eye would have difficulty evaluating them on its own. Waggoner prides itself on quality and a high degree of precision, and we know these are extremely important to our customers as well. No dimension is too small to go unchecked in our quality control process. Prototypes and large runs alike will all be checked to these standards.

The final tool I’d like to cover today is our CMM. CMM stands for “Coordinate-Measuring Machine.” This is a machine that measures the dimensions of physical objects using a probe. Like our CNC Machines, the CMM needs a competent programmer and skilled operator to set up and function correctly. To keep the explanation short, the CMM is effectively a robot that takes measurements using 3 axes and dedicated sensors for each one! It is an incredible machine for any shop that values high precision and fast part production. Our CMM helps us to ensure the quality our customers expect, as well as increase the efficiency of our quality control processes.
